Course description
Transgender and Gender nonbinary (TGNB) clients experience gender minority stress, which influences mental and physical health outcomes. The Gender Minority Stress Model (Testa et al., 2015) discusses proximal stressors, such as internalized transphobia, negative expectations, and concealment; distal stressors, such as gender-related discrimination, gender-related rejection, gender related victimization, and nonaffirmative of gender identity; and resilience factors, such as community connectedness and pride, that TGNB clients may experience. Clinicians may be limited in addressing distal stress factors directly in our clinical work, but can have a major impact on proximal stress factors. Utilizing psychodynamic theory, with an emphasis on ego defenses, this course will examine how TGNB clients may unconsciously manage their experiences of gender minority stress. This course will explore how to help TGNB clients manage stressors and enhance resilience.
