Course Description

The concept of dialectics originated in philosophy, by those who sought to find truth and synthesis in multiple divergent points of view. Integrating dialectics into psychotherapy can enhance patients’ abilities to become more open, curious, compassionate, and flexible.

This course provides practical instruction in how to utilize dialectical thinking and interventions to improve patients' psychological and behavioral flexibility. This can particularly help patients who struggle with dichotomous thinking, rigid belief systems (e.g. righteousness), limited behavioral responses, difficulty with perspective taking (including empathy), limited insight, or a combination of these.

While this course is rooted in a cognitive behavioral framework, participants from all theoretical orientations can apply the knowledge presented in this course to their own work. Specific knowledge of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which popularized the idea of dialectics in the clinical context, is not required.

1 Hour CE. Recorded Video Format (non-interactive)
