Course description

An effective treatment for any clinical problem cannot take place without an accurate     understanding of its origin. How we conceptualize the issues that bring couples to treatment has the potential to impact the trajectory of the therapeutic process as well as its outcomes. This course was designed to introduce clinicians to the terminology and etiology of infidelity as well as the potential impacts on treatment and outcomes in the context of working with couples. Participants in the course will learn a cross-cultural definition of infidelity that can accommodate various types of relationships and worldviews. This course is intended to deepen clinicians' understanding of the phenomena of infidelity in order to strengthen their conceptualization of such cases.

Learning objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify at least two of the main terms used to describe infidelity and the connotation associated with these terms

  • Identify two major challenges of defining infidelity that impacts treatment and research

  • Describe the main elements needed for a cross-cultural definition of infidelity

  • Identify at least three examples of individual, relationship, and environmental etiological factors that contribute to infidelity

Talal H. Alsaleem, PsyD, is a California licensed marriage and family therapist (#49918) recognized as a leading expert in the field of infidelity counseling. He is the author of Infidelity: the Best Worst Thing that Could Happen to Your Marriage, and the founder of the Infidelity Counseling Center. His research interests and clinical work are focused on identifying the causes of infidelity and providing the best treatment for recovery from its impact. He developed Systematic Affair Recovery Therapy (SART)™, a method of infidelity counseling that has helped hundreds of couples navigate the challenges of the healing journey from affairs.
