A plethora of research has identified the need for culturally-sensitive interventions in healthcare globally, yet there remain gaps in the application of evidence-based treatments when it comes to treating the mental health of marginalized groups. This presentation focuses on the integration of multicultural theories with the application of evidence-based interventions from the three waves of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe at least four reasons why diversity is important in the application of evidence-based practices.

  • Integrate knowledge from multicultural theories into the application of at least three CBT interventions.

  • Identify two ways in which third-wave CBT approaches differ from earlier CBT approaches in their consideration of cultural issues.

Peter Economou, PhD

Peter Economou, PhD, is a New York licensed Psychologist and Associate Professor at Rutgers University. He consults with multiple universities and major professional sports leagues on issues surrounding psychology and performance. He has published and presented on topics including race and multiculturalism, sport and performance psychology, mindfulness, and intimate partner violence.
