Course Description

Immigration evaluations are clinical assessments that licensed mental health professionals provide as a professional service for persons who are navigating immigration proceedings. Clients who seek support from clinicians for immigration purposes may require an evaluation for a specific immigration case in which the client is seeking to adjust their legal status. Common immigration cases that clinicians take on include the U-Visa, VAWA, Extreme Hardship, and Asylum. The role of the counselor is to provide a professional evaluation based on the connection between the client and the immigration case. 

The course is aimed to help licensed mental health professionals learn about contributing their knowledge and expertise in these cases by writing immigration evaluations.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the assessment needs associated with at least three different kinds of immigration cases

Juan Santos, MS, CRC, LPC

Juan Santos is a North Carolina Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Rehabilitation Counselor. For years he has supported hundreds of individuals by writing immigration evaluations in cases ranging from Waivers to U-Visas. He utilizes his experience in working with immigration attorneys and writing hardship evaluations to help other clinicians learn how to conduct immigration evaluations. Juan is currently a doctorate student at the University of the Cumberland’s where he is a pursuing a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision.
